Cloud Concepts

The economics and models of cloud computing: benefits, the shared responsibility model, and the IaaS/PaaS/SaaS and public/private/hybrid taxonomies.

Cloud computing trades capital expenditure (CapEx) for operational expenditure (OpEx) — you pay only for what you consume. Key benefits Microsoft emphasizes: high availability, scalability (scale up/down and out/in), elasticity, agility, geo-distribution, and disaster recovery.

The shared responsibility model divides duties between you and Microsoft. The cloud provider always secures the physical datacenter, network, and hosts. You always retain responsibility for your data, accounts, and identities. Everything in between (OS, network controls, applications) shifts toward the provider as you move from IaaS → PaaS → SaaS.

Which cost model does cloud computing primarily promote?

Under the shared responsibility model, what is ALWAYS the customer’s responsibility?
