FortiGuard Services and Security Fabric Basics

How FortiGuard threat intelligence feeds your protection, and what the Security Fabric adds.

FortiGuard services

FortiGate's security profiles are only as current as their intelligence. FortiGuard is Fortinet's subscription threat-intelligence service that continuously updates:

  • Antivirus and IPS signatures

  • Web filtering categories

  • Application control signatures

  • Botnet/C2 IP and domain reputation

Keep licenses valid and scheduled updates enabled — stale signatures are a silent security gap.

The Security Fabric

The Fortinet Security Fabric links FortiGate with other Fortinet (and third-party) devices into one coordinated system:

  • Root FortiGate anchors the fabric; downstream FortiGates and devices (FortiSwitch, FortiAP, FortiAnalyzer) join it.

  • Topology views show every device and endpoint in one place.

  • Automation stitches trigger actions (quarantine a host, send an alert) when an event fires.

  • Security Rating audits your configuration against best practices and scores it.

Why it matters

A single firewall sees only its own traffic. The fabric shares telemetry so a threat detected at one point can trigger a response everywhere — for example, automatically quarantining an infected endpoint at the switch port.

What it means for you

FortiGuard keeps your defenses current; the Security Fabric makes them cooperate. On the NSE 4 exam and in practice, understanding how these pieces connect is what separates device-level configuration from network-wide security architecture.
